In 1893, Robert L. Ripley, creator of the "Believe It or Not!" newspaper feature, was born in Santa Rosa, Calif.
In 1926, Hirohito became emperor of Japan.
In 1941, during World War II, Japan announced the surrender of the British-Canadian garrison at Hong Kong. Chinese residents of Hong Kong gave the victors a parade.
In 1943, Japanese forces commanded by Gen. Iwao Matsuda counterattecked the American beachhead at Cape Gloucester, New Britain. Americal Division landed at Bougainville.
In 1944, the U.S. 8th Army relieved the 6th Army on Leyte.
