In 1941, Japanese forces seized Tarawa and Makin atolls in the Gilbert Islands. The first American bombing mission of the war took B-17s of the 19th Bombardment Group against Japanese ships off Vigan, Philippines.
In 1943, Chiang Kai-Shek demanded greater financial aid from the Allies.
