In 1941, a state of emergency was declared in Malaya as Japanese forces drew near.
In 1942, the Australian 21st Brigade captured Gona in New Guinea. Responsibility for the "Hump" airlift was transferred from General Stilwell in China to Air Transport Command in India.
In 1944, on the Salween front, Chinese forces took Chefang.
