In 1863, Filipino independence leader Andres Bonifacio was born. This date is a Philippines holiday known as National Heroes Day.
In 1944, Chiang Kai-Shek withdrew Chinese forces from Burma to strengthen Kunming defenses.
In 1949, Chinese Communists captured Chungking.
In 1962, U Thant of Burma was elected Secretary-General of the United Nations, succeeding the late Dag Hammarskjold.
