In 1864, a Colorado militia killed at least 150 peaceful Cheyenne Indians in what became known as the Sand Creek Massacre.
In 1944, an American submarine sank aircraft carrier Shinano on her trial run. Shinano was the largest carrier in the world, sister to battleships Yamata and Musashi.
In 1971, the Americal Division was inactivated.
