In 1935, the Pan Am Martin M-130 flying boat "China Clipper" began regular trans-Pacific flights, taking off from Alameda, Calif., carrying more than 100,000 pieces of mail on the first transPacific airmail flight. Passenger flight began Oct. 21, 1936.
