In 1942, the Australian 25th Brigade reached Kokoda after a long campaign in the Owen Stanley Mountains, New Guinea.
In 1943, the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay occured, an artillery duel between American and Japanese cruisers.
In 1944, American Marines concentrated on pockets of fierce resistance on Mount Umurbrogal, Peleliu.
In 1947, Howard Hughes' mammoth "Spruce Goose" flew one mile at an altitude of 70 feet in Long Beach Harbor, California.
