In 1942, after losing more than 4,000 men and 100 aircraft, Japanese forces under General Kawaguchi begin to retire to Koli Point and Kokumbona on Guadacanal. Japanese forces on the Owen Stanley Mountains in New Guinea also begin a withdrawal.
