In 1944, the Australian cruiser Canberra is seriously damaged by a Japanese aerial torpedo; the American carrier Franklin is hit by suicide aircraft.
In 1990, Le Duc Tho, co-founder of the Vietnamese Communist Party, died in Hanoi at age 79.
