In 1446, King Sejong of the Yi Dynasty established the Hangul 24-letter phonetic alphabet in Korea.
In 1776, Mission Dolores was founded in San Francisco. Formerly Mission San Francisco de Asis, it's the oldest building in the Bay area.
In 1944, Admiral Spruance was appointed to command the upcoming invasion of Iwo Jima. In China, Generalissimo blamed the loss of Southern China indirectly on President Roosevelt.
