In 1942, the 1st Marine Division attacked Japanese forces on the perimeter of Henderson Field on Guadacanal, digging in on Height 65 overlooking Matanikau River. In New Guinea, Allied troops prepared a counteroffensive.
In 1944, after days of unsuccessful assaults against Japanese forces on Mount Umurbrogal, Peleliu, operations were suspended.
