In 1945, Japanese Prime Minister Kantaro Suzuki rejected the Potsdam Declaration, saying "it has no important value." He called on Japanese to ignore the ultimatum and continue fighting. Destroyer Lowry was damaged in the Philippine Sea by a kaiten suicide torpedo launched by sub I-58.
In 1953, the Korean War armistice was signed at Panmunjom, ending three years of fighting.
